how this desktop works

This site is laid out as a desktop. The icons around the edges open windows, and the start button on the taskbar at the bottom lists the same places. On a phone the taskbar is a bar along the top.
Windows
A window can be dragged by its title bar and resized from any edge or corner. Double-clicking the title bar fills the desktop with it; doing it again puts it back.
The three lights on the left of the title bar are, in order:
- close, red
- minimize, yellow, which hides the window and keeps it open
- maximize, green
Every open window has a button on the taskbar. Clicking it brings the window to the front; clicking it again when the window is already in front minimizes it.
Icons
One click selects an icon, a second click or a double click opens it. Dragging across empty desktop selects several, the arrow keys move between icons and Enter opens.
On a phone there is no room to drag anything, so each window takes the whole screen and closing it returns to the icons.
Addresses
Every window that is a place has its own address. Bringing a window to the front puts its address in the address bar, so copying the URL always links to what is on top, and the back button walks through the windows that were looked at.
| window | address |
|---|---|
| home | / |
| notes | /notes |
| a single note | /notes/its-file-name |
| numbers | /numbers |
| products | /products |
| trash | /trash |
Display options has no address. It is a control, not a place.
Where notes come from
Each note is one markdown file in content/notes. See writing a note for the format.
